Week 4 – Gmail

Email and attachments

In depth gmail on the tablet:

You can access your gmail account from any device that can connect to the internet with a browser.  On a tablet or a phone there is a special app that provides that access directly.

Gmail has different versions which may look or work slightly differently.  Which version are you using?

When you start Gmail the first screen you will probably see isthe incoming message screen.

On the left are the different “Labels” or folders where Google has attempted to organise your messages.  The number next to the label is the number of UNREAD emails. The inbox labels are above the other labels.

On the right are the message summaries. The message title is in slightly heavier or bold type (if you haven’t read it) at the begining of the message.Tapping the actual message opens up the full message.  Tapping the star adds it to the starred label BUT does not remove it from its current position.

To the left of the message summary is the name of whom sent the message with a coloured box with a letter preceeding it.  If there is more than one box, the message forms part of a conversation.  Tapping here changes the options on the top menu bar.

Gmail messages are not by default stored on your tablet, but are taken from you internet based gmail account onto your device.  However, you can change the label settings to sync messages which means that they are saved on the tablet either for a specific period of time or forever.  Syncing messages enables notifiction settings.

Swipe to archive allows you to move messages out of your boxes quickly.  It does not get rid of them, but places them in the “All Mail” box.

To delete mail, simply tap the coloured name box to theleft of the message and choose the bin from the top menu.

Mail will be continued in the next session.
