Gmail in detail

From our session in February 2015.

Gmail is now included in the folder of Apps which you will normally find on your desktop.

Start with the top bar: menu sidebar, active folder/label, search, archive, bin, mark as read, move to folder/label, email options.

The menu sidebar allows you to sort your mail.

The folder/labels are pre-set in the App and you cannot add or change them.  You can do this however if you log in to you gmail account online.  It’s best to choose the basic html format if you are using a tablet or slow internet connection.  When you do so you will notice a more button in the top middle of your screen or on the left entitled “labels”. Tapping this will give you the option to add labels which will then appear in your app.  This allows you to organise you emails.

Create a label and then find all emails in that category (e.g. twitter) and then move them there. Can you see other ways of moving emails into labels.

When you archive a message, it is still there but is not seen in your inbox.  You can find it if you look in the all mail label section, but you will need to know which message you archived.

However, you can list only the archived messages by searching for them.  You type the following in the search box:

has:nouserlabels -in:Sent -in:Chat -in:Draft -in:Inbox

When you put something in the bin it is simply ready for deletion.  You have to empty the bin to really delete a message.

Do the tablets need a bit of “cleaning up”?

What does swiping an email do?

Note the settings options on the left hand side.  Can you set the swiping action to delete?

Here you can add email accounts, so like in outlook and other apps, you can have all your emails in one place.

Composing an email: simply tap the pencil icon (red) and complete the details.  Note the drop down on the To: line which give you the cc and bcc options.

please send one to: chris@virtualriders.net

Can you attach something to the email? How?

How else can you send attachments?

If you receive attachments, you can save them to google drive:

Now that you’ve had a good practice at using the gmail app, Google have brought out a new one – Inbox.
