SD cards and tablet storage

A Secure Digital card (SD card) is a kind of memory card. Such cards are often used to store images or data in digital cameras. There are different capacities between 4 Megabytes and 512  gigabytescurrently. The card has a rectangular design, but one edge is chipped off. This means that the cards cannot be inserted into the cameras (or other devices) the wrong way.  Often phones and tablets have slots for microSD cards.

A micro SC card the smallest memory card that can be bought; at 15 mm × 11 mm × 1 mm (about the size of a fingernail), it is about a quarter of the size of a normal-sized SD card. There are adapters that make the small microSD able to fit in devices that have slots for standard SD, miniSD, Memory Stick Duo card, and even USB. But, not all of the different cards can work together. Many microSD cards are sold with a standard SD adapter, so that people can use them in devices that take standard SD but not microSD cards.

SD cards provide extra memory for your device, so that you can either store apps or data on them and free up space on the internal memory.

If you have a memory card in your device, the option to move apps onto it will be present on the settings/apps/ individual app screen.  However, many apps come pre-installed on your device and so cannot be moved (or deleted).

Moving data can often be acheived automatically by checking your storge settings and choosing to transfer data to SD card. You may also see a list of what apps are using what amount of storage and have the option to clear data and the cache.

However, if you don’t see this you may have to either connect your tablet to move files to the card, or use a file manager (Asus file Manager/file commander/Astro Cloud & File Manager).

Some individual apps give you the option of where to store their data, such as the camera which should recognise an SD card when it is first installed.  You can also go to settings in the camera app and you can choose where to store your photos.  However, this option may not be available in KitKat (Android 4.4).  The solution is to install the MX Carmera app.  Samsung devices are supposed to recognise your sd card and pop up a message when you put them in.
