WiFi (it’s not an acronym) can be defined as a facility allowing computers, smartphones, or other devices to connect to the Internet or communicate with one another wirelessly within a particular area.
The term Hotspot is used to define an area where Wi-Fi access is available. There is a wifi hotspot within the Boot and Slipper. If you have broadband at home your router may also have (and transmit) wifi (wireless access point).
If you are using wifi in a public area make sure you take precautions to make your data safe.
If you have broadband at home you may have more than one device connected. They might be connected through wires or through wifi and they all share access to the internet. This means you have a network.
Your router will probably control your network by assigning numbers to each device that connects. This is called DHCP and the numbers are called IP numbers (addresses) which will fall within a range. The numbers are made up of 4 sets of 3 digits (IPv4) and at home will start with:
192.168.xxx.xxx
The wifi transmitter will broadcast an identifying name (SSID) which your device will recognise at to which you can connect. You may need a password. Make sure you use something that your neighbours don’t know! Once you are connected the router then assigns the IP address to your device.
