Virtual Reality (VR) is the use of computer technology to create a simulated environment. Unlike traditional user interfaces, VR places the user inside an experience. Instead of viewing a screen in front of them, users are immersed and able to interact with 3D worlds. This can be done with a variety of devices such as a headset or a pair of “glasses”. Google has taken a very simple route and developed something called Google Cardboard which allows you to use your smartphone with the device to experience VR. It works by creating a pair of images on your screen and you view these images through biconvex lenses. This warps the images to fill your field of view whichyou then perceive as a single image and creates the illusion of depth through stereoscopy. There are many similar devices to the cardboard device and some come with bluetoodh. It might also be useful to have some headphones to fully immerse yourself in the expereince.
Although in early stages, this development is coming on rapidly. It has commercial and training opportunities and there are more and more videos being created with this option.
In order to use this kind of system without breaking the bank you need google cardboard or equivalent (around £25.00), a smart phone (needs to be able to display VR – i.e. quite expensive) and a little knowledge. The videos tend to come in the form of games/experiences from the play store (android) or on YouTube. However, some are more specialist and only available for specific headsets.
Have a go, but beware, you need to be sitting down and you may feel sick.
