Skype is an application that provides video chat and voice call services. Users may exchange such digital documents as images, text, video and any others, and may transmit both text and video. It is owned by Microsoft. If the person you want to talk to also has Skype, it’s free to use the service (minus the cost of your Internet connection, of course). There is a fee if you’re calling a regular landline or mobile phone, and there’s also a cost associated with some of the more advanced services.
Exercise
Firstly we need to make sure that the Skype accounts on our tablets are up to date. Go to play store, my apps and see if Skype needs updating. If so, please do it. If you notice that other apps need updating, simply hand your tablet in at the end of the session without turning it off.
Open Skype. Your first task will be to find someone who has a Skype account and add them to your list of contacts. Can you find Chris Smith. With Common names it may be better to use an email address. Try cw.smith.000@outlook.com. How can you be sure it is the right one… click on the little “i” by his name and see if it gives you any further information. Can you find anyone you know? Send Chris a message and invite him to become a contact.
Contact someone by Skype. skype needs to be open in the background to receive calls. Pair up with some else in the room with a Skype account and then get one of you to go to the other end of the bar. Now call them and have a conversation. The objective here is to practice how to have video conversations so that you can contact friends and family over the Christmas period.
Once this exercise has been completed, we are going to demonstrate a group call and a remote training session!
