Petya Ransomware

This latest virus is claimed not to be as serious as WannaCry, but uses some of the same vulnerabilities as it.  It freezes a user’s computer until a “ransom” is paid in virtual currency bitcoin.  It normally come is the form of a .pdf or .doc or .docx or .rtf attachment to an email.

The email address to which you are to send your ransom has been blocked, so in this case there is no way you can recover your files.

There are going to be more of these viruses coming along because an internet company in south Korea has recently supposedly a paid $1m ransom!

So, make a backup of all your files and keep that backup offline!

These is however, a simple way to prevent this variant from working on your computer.  Please note that this offers no guarantee and will only work until the virus writers change the code…
