Installing Apps and the stores

What are Apps?

Apps are basically simple programs that you can download onto your phone or tablet. There are all kinds of different apps, including social media apps (such as Facebook and Twitter), apps which allow you to chat with friends (such as Skype), apps which help you to get around (such as Google Maps), apps which play music and video (such as Spotify and YouTube) and so on.

You can download apps from your phone or tablet’s online store; so for instance, Apple devices such as the iPhone and iPad use Apple’s App Store for downloading apps. Some apps are free to download, while others cost a small fee.

Some apps come with ‘in-app purchases’, which means you can spend money inside of the app in order to unlock bonus features. Ever read a story about how some parents discovered – with suitable horror – that their kid rang up a £5000 bill on their phone? Chances are it was through in-app purchases. So be sure to keep an eye on what apps your family members are using.

Where do you get Apps?

If you have an Android phone or tablet you download apps from the Play Store.  If you have an Apple device you download from iTunes & App Store.  Before you can complete the process however, you must have registered with the stores.  This means having an Apple ID or a gmail account.  On Windows tablets you need a Microsoft account before you can use the Windows Market.

You can see what apps you have installed from the different management consoles for each system.

  • iTunes is a program you download onto your computer.  When you link it to your Apple ID you can look at your account and the apps you have purchased/downloaded.
  • Android apps are anaged through your gmail account online which is where you can delete apps etc.

There are other “stores” where you can get apps.  Sometimes this can be risky and may require that your phone be “rooted” or “jailbraked”.  This means replacing the basic system to allow the installation of unapproved apps.

How to use the stores/shops

Although the layouts are different, the principle of how they work is the same for both Apple and Android.  Basically you can search for an app, look for an app by category and see featured apps.  You can also download films, tv shows, podcasts and books.  There are specific apps available for this items but you can get to the content from the stores.
