How do I know which app to choose?

  • The first rule of selecting apps is to know what you need. Don’t browse the app store. Write down what your requirements are, what does the app need to do, does it need to be used on different platforms and does the data need to be transferred.
  • Do you really need the app? Make sure you have a reason.  Are you willing to spend money on it?
  • Read reviews, look at scores and check how many times it has been downloaded.  An app that has been downloaded 200 times and has 4.5 stars may well not be as good as an app that has been downloaded 2 million times and has 4 stars.  What google terms would you use? Is it better to search for apps through the app store or through a general web search?  Does google bias its search towards its own android (and iOS) apps?
  • Watch the video of the app if there is one and read its summary detail.  Does it look as if it hits your checklist?
  • Ask othe people what they use and if they have been happy.
  • Set yourself a browsing time limit for your research.  Each app your think might be worthwhile will need to be downloaded and tested.  Some you can reject quickly, some might have to have a bit more time spend on them.  Score them yourself and make a note.  If an app is definitely out, then delete it before installing another.
  • When you have chosen your app and installed it, get to know it… and then a month later, do a quick review.  Do you actually use the app? Is it doing what you need it to do? If not, then should you just delete it?
